| CHARLOTTE GRAY |

Cate Blanchett has arrived as the screen’s most versatile actress and it seems that no role is too great a challenge to her. As Charlotte Gray, Cate has become a Scottish spy/agent in occupied France during WWII in search for her lover, a pilot missing in action. Highly respected Australian director, Gillian Armstrong, has fashioned a movie about the intrigue of both espionage and responses of the heart. With a determined heroine, it’s a refreshing and confident new spin on a plot that reworks some fairly traditional themes. The film is particularly well photographed, with the era recreated in a way which has probably never been bettered. The tone of the film is essentially one of a romanticised view of the times and is thoroughly satisfying and rewarding. We suggest that carping critics and those wanting more realism watch WWII documentaries. For everyone else this film is a must.
