| LE COLONEL CHABERT |
 |
|
A grand adaptation of the Balzac novel with Gerard Depardieu as an officer who takes a decade to recover from injury in the Napoleonic wars, only to return to Paris and find that his ‘widow’ (Fanny Ardant) has claimed his fortune and taken a new husband, the politically ambitious Count Ferraud (Andre Dussollier). Director Yves Angelo (formerly a renowned cinematographer), with particularly fine art direction by Bernard Vezat, has enhanced his film with a well-observed Dickensian mood which helps make LE COLONEL CHABERT a particular treat. Early scenes are accompanied on the soundtrack by the second movement of Beethoven’s Trio in D Major, Op. 70 (the Ghost trio) and aptly chosen classical music throughout sounds superb at The REGAL.. Masterly, painterly and extremely powerful... the cast is simply superb... an excellent film - Scott Murray, CINEMA PAPERS. (From France/English subtitles)
