| THE TRACKER |
 |
|
Either as director or producer, Rolf De Heer has given us some extraordinarily involving films, and THE TRACKER arrives at top of the list. Simply, the story concerns three mounted policemen (Gary Sweet, Damon Gameau and Grant Page) being lead by a tracker (David Gulpilil) through harsh bushland. The journey and isolation provide the opportunity, and the time, to explore the characters. The structure of the film is such that the use of song, symbolism, and paintings by Peter Coad maintain the intensity of the narrative, while at the same time allowing the film to function on metaphorical and poetic levels. The stunning photography provides us with memorable big-screen images. Probably the most critically acclaimed Australian film of the year.
