| THE GLEANERS & I |
 |
|
Gleaners are traditionally those who pick through already harvested fields for the odd potato or turnip. Film-maker Agnes Varda extends her ever-seeking camera to take in a broader view, embracing the culture of those who seek for whatever society has determined it has no further use for. A lifetime of collecting film images has made Agnes Varda a gleaner in her own field and gives her a connection with her subjects that creates a touching human portrait. The visually poetic film takes its audience from forgotten corners of the French countryside to Paris and its suburbs. Michael Wilmington, CHICAGO TRIBUNE, writes: Of all the movies I’ve seen in the past several years, this is one of the ones I love the most. THE GLEANERS AND I seems to me a treasure: one of those films that open up a world to us while ultimately revealing the heart and mind of its maker. It’s simplicity is deceptive. Though this is a movie created with bewitching ease and cunningly disguised art, all the qualities that make Varda a great director and one of the most significant cineastes of the past century are in THE GLEANERS AND I. In its frames, we see her empathy, skill, curiosity, wit, poetry and passion for life: everything she has gleaned from a lifetime of love and movies. 10/10 Full marks THE SUN-HERALD. And for SBS MOVIE SHOW people: David -. Margaret - A unique film of sublime beauty.
