| TO BE AND TO HAVE |

... 1.5 million French film-goers can't be wrong. Best film!... and it's a spellbinding documentary dedicated to the art of teaching. In the small village of Puy-du-Dome in Auvergne, George Lopez is in charge of a dozen children aged between 3 and 12 years... one class for children of all ages and this unique and enchanting film has made him a national hero. Beautifully photographed in the French heartlands, TO BE AND TO HAVE captures radiant images of youngsters being encouraged to learn, as a schoolteacher navigates their course towards adolescence, resolving the inevitable conflicts and dealing with their problems. This class, typical of many in small communities in France, becomes a sharing place for the issues of everyday life in the worlds of these children. Part of the miracle of this inspirational film is the pervading sense of serenity within the class, operating with seemingly complete disregard for the film crew in attendance over an extended period from December to June. An unmissable treat for anyone who has taught, of even been a student. (From France / English subtitles)
