It’s A scrapbook view of domesticity during the 1950s with a sensibility derived from today’s preoccupation with the intrusiveness of reality television programs in which people do anything but act normally. Folke (Tomas Norstrom) is sent to neighbouring Norway to observe the kitchen behaviour of a grumpy old man Isak, (Joachim Calmeyer), with a view to maximising kitchen design. Isak soon regrets signing up for the experiment and becomes antagonistic towards his documenting intruder… And then director Bent Hamer unexpectedly turns his film from what looks like being a bitter game of one-upmanship into an immensely satisfying look at a developing friendship between two lonely people. 2004 Academy Award Nominee. Margaret: “It’s a Scandinavian sense of humour… laidback whimsy. I really wanted to see it again. And it was just as lovely the second time around"
